The Hazardous Materials and Confined Space Rescue course can be undertaken standalone or as part of the Certificate III in Mine Emergency Response and Rescue (RII30715).

This course is suitable for existing emergency responders wishing to perform rescue response duties in the areas of hazardous materials and confined space rescue.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will gain skills and knowledge in:

  • Responding to incidents involving dangerous goods and hazardous substances
  • Using specific equipment to detect airborne contaminants, liquids and solids
  • Safely combating incidents involving hazardous materials
  • Detecting and identifying contaminants using specialist equipment
  • Assessing the risks the materials pose to the public and the environment
  • Formulating, implementing and reviewing a plan for safe isolation and removal and documenting any improvement process that could be made to further mitigate the risks
  • Undertaking rescue in confined spaces, as defined in AS 2865-2009 Confined spaces, as a member of a single agency or multi-disciplinary team

Upon successful completion of this course participants will be issued a Statement of Attainment in the following units:

  • PUAFIR316 Identify, detect and monitor hazardous materials at an incident
  • PUAFIR320 Render hazardous materials incidents safe
  • PUASAR025A Undertake confined space rescue
  • RIIERR302E Respond to local emergencies and incidents
  • RIIRIS301D Apply risk management processes
Entry requirements

Prior to undertaking the above, participants must complete the following units:

  • PUAFIR207B Operate breathing apparatus open circuit
  • PUAFIR215 Prevent injury

These units contribute to the completion of the Certificate III in Mine Emergency Response and Rescue (RII30715).
