Course overview

Approved health and safety representative (HSR) training assists elected representatives to understand and fulfil their role and functions.

HSRs are entitled to choose and attend a SafeWork NSW-approved five-day training course in work health and safety, and a one day refresher course each year during their term of office.

Duration

Full course – five days

Refresher – one day

Entry requirements

Full course – N/A

Refresher – participants are an elected HSR who have completed the approved five-day initial training course or the gap training course prior to 31 December 2012.

Additional information

HSR training courses can also be accessed by other members of organisations such as health and safety committee members, managers and supervisors to assist them in understanding the legislation relating to consultation and the important role of HSRs in the workplace.

Once a HSR has completed approved training, they can exercise additional powers to:

  • direct unsafe work to stop when they have a reasonable concern that carrying out the work would expose a worker of their work group to a serious risk
  • issue a ‘Provisional Improvement Notice’ (PIN) when they reasonably believe there is a contravention of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (NSW).
