Introduction
This course provides you with the skills and knowledge to select, don, operate and maintain breathing apparatus equipment (CABA) in an irrespirable atmosphere.
Who should attend?
Individuals who may be required to use breathing apparatus as part of their duties, such as an emergency response team member, or those wishing to acquire new skills.
What you will learn
- How to identity workplace hazards, risks and advise others
- Implement and monitor risk control procedures
- Conduct pre-donning check and tests on breathing apparatus
- Donning procedures
- How to operate in breathing apparatus
- Post operation procedures
Credential issued
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for the following units:
- PUAFIR207 Operate breathing apparatus open circuit
Course delivery
This course is delivered through classroom-based training, desktop scenarios and practical exercises.
Assessment includes written, oral and practical tests.
Please note: to meet the unit of competency requirements and comply with AS/NZS 1715:2009, all students must be clean-shaven to be assessed and deemed competent in this course.

Entry requirements
- There are no formal pre-requisites for this course.
- This course is based on a Certificate II level qualification. You should have appropriate literacy and numeracy skills to manage course work, activities and assessments.
- Mines Rescue recommends you be aware of the policies and procedures of your workplace before starting the course.

Refresher:
Mines Rescue recommends students complete refresher training every two years.

Students Under 18
Mines Rescue minimum age for enrolment is 15 years.
If you are between the ages of 15 and 18, we require your parent or guardian to sign your Student Enrolment Form. Please
contact a Mines Rescue Station directly to enquire or enrol into your course.
Visa Holders
Mines Rescue is not CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) registered. If you are visiting Australia and hold a visa, please contact Mines Rescue directly prior to enrolling into any of our courses.
