Overview
The Standing Health Committee is a sub-committee of the Coal Services Board which was formed with the aim of improving the health and wellbeing of NSW coal industry workers, by identifying and developing health– focussed initiatives for CS Health to develop, in collaboration with industry stakeholders.
The main functions of the Standing Health Committee are to:
- To identify strategic priorities to meet industry needs
- Identify and prioritise health focused initiatives to be undertaken by CS Health or supported by Coal Services
- Monitor and evaluate initiative results and outcomes
- Report back to industry stakeholders.
Background
In October 2022, the Coal Services Board approved the formation of the Standing Health Committee, based on the successful model of the Standing Dust Committee.
The first meeting of the Standing Health Committee was held in February 2023.
Meetings are currently held bi-monthly.
Identified priorities and initiatives
The Standing Health Committee’s initial priority is to develop NSW Coal Industry Health Standards.
The Industry Health Standards aim to provide greater consistency, clarity and transparency regarding medical determinations and improve management of identified health issues across the NSW coal industry.
The Standing Health Committee has released two health standards so far:
- the Respiratory Health Standard: 1st edition in August, 2024 and 2nd edition in October, 2025.
- the Cardiovascular Health Standard in July, 2025. A 12-month review of this standard is due for completion in 2026.
The Standing Health Committee has developed a Sleep Health Standard, which is currently undergoing industry consultation and is planned for release in 2026.
The Standing Health Committee has also commenced development of a Diabetes Health Standard, which is the 4th in a series of 10 health standards prioritised for development.
