Overview
The Standing Health Committee is a sub-committee of the Coal Services Board which was formed with the aim of improving the long-term health and wellbeing of NSW coal industry workers, their families and communities in which they live.
The main functions of the Standing Health Committee are to:
- Identify and prioritise health focused initiatives to be undertaken by CS Health or supported by Coal Services
- Monitor and analyse project results and outcomes
- Evaluate results and discuss improvement strategies
- Report back to industry stakeholders.
Background
In October 2022, the Coal Services Board approved the formation of the Standing Health Committee, based on the successful model of the Standing Dust Committee.
The first meeting of the Standing Health Committee was held in February 2023.
Meetings are currently held bi-monthly.
Identified priorities and initiatives
The Standing Health Committee’s initial priority is to develop Industry Health Standards.
The Industry Health Standards aim to provide greater consistency, clarity and transparency regarding medical determinations and improve medical management of identified health issues across the NSW coal industry.
The Standing Health Committee has released two health standards so far:
- the Respiratory Health Standard in August 2024 and
- the Cardiovascular Health Standard in July 2025.
The Standing Health Committee is currently developing a Sleep Health Standard, which is planned for release in 2026.
Industry representation
The Standing Health Committee is comprised of representatives from Coal Services and the Mining & Energy Union, mining houses, mining contractors and independent industry consultants and experts.
