Healthy eating is a key part of maintaining good health.
Healthy eating involves eating the right mix of foods in the right amounts to fuel your body and provide the nutrients needed to function well and feel your best.
Healthy eating helps to:
- maintain a healthy weight
- reduce the risk of developing chronic health issues such as heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers.
- boost your immune system
- improve mood and mental health
- improve sleep quality
How can I eat more healthily?
Maintaining a healthy diet as a coal mine worker can be challenging, with the influence of shift work and rotating rosters, and the temptation of takeaway food. But healthy eating is achievable with the right knowledge and preparation.
A healthy diet involves:
- eating more fruit and vegetables, legumes and wholegrain/high fibre-bread and cereals, healthy protein sources (fish, chicken, lean meat, eggs, nuts and seeds) and reduced fat dairy food or dairy alternatives.
- eating less foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt, (including pies, pizza, deep fried food, processed meats, cakes, pastries, lollies and chocolate), and limiting sugary drinks and alcohol, whilst drinking plenty of water.
