Introduction

This course provides students with the skills and knowledge to work with explosives in underground coal mines.

Who should attend?

Individuals wishing to apply for a NSW Underground Coal Blasting Explosives User Licence.

What you will learn

  • Types of explosives and their uses
  • Magazine security and record-keeping requirements
  • Methods for storing, handling and transporting of explosives
  • Explosive loading, stemming, wiring and initiation procedures
  • Supporting, conducting and managing blasting operations

Successful completion of this course meets the formal educational requirements to apply for NSW Coal Blasting Explosives User Licence (applicable to students who hold a current Deputy’s Certificate of Competence or higher).

Credential issued

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for the following units:

  • RIIBLA202F Support underground shotfiring operations
  • RIIBLA205E Store, handle and transport explosives
  • RIIBLA302E Conduct shotfiring operations in underground coal mines
  • RIIBLA401E Manage blasting operations            

These units contribute to the completion of the RII40420 Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations and the RII50920 Diploma of Underground Coal Mining Management.

Course delivery

This course is delivered through classroom-based training, desktop scenarios, virtual reality and practical exercises.

Assessment includes written, oral and practical tests.

Duration

Five days

Entry requirements
  • There are no formal pre-requisites for this course.
  • It is expected that you have experience working in an underground coal mine environment.
  • This course is based on a Certificate IV level qualification. You should have appropriate literacy and numeracy skills to manage course work, activities and assessments.
  • Mines Rescue recommends you be aware of the policies and procedures of your workplace before starting the course.

What you need to bring:

  • Fully enclosed footwear
  • Unique Student Identifier (USI) number

Students Under 18

Mines Rescue minimum age for enrolment is 15 years. If you are between the ages of 15 and 18, we require your parent or guardian to sign your Student Enrolment Form. Please contact a Mines Rescue Station directly to enquire or enrol into your course.

Visa Holders

Mines Rescue is not CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) registered. If you are visiting Australia and hold a visa, please contact Mines Rescue directly prior to enrolling into any of our courses.
