The RII40420 - Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations prepares you to take on the more senior responsibilities of mining supervisors and team leaders (Deputies) such as managing teams, implementing risk management systems and applying statutory requirements.
Who should attend?
Individuals who wish to pursue a career as a Mining Supervisor (Deputy) and are unable to attend all delivery sessions face to face.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a RII40420 Certificate IV in Underground Coal Operations.

Successful completion of this course will meet the NSW Resources Regulator’s Tertiary or Vocational Qualification requirement to apply for the Deputy of Underground Coal Mines examination. Please refer to the NSW Resources Regulator website for further information.
Course delivery
This course is delivered through a combination of face-to-face classroom training and self-directed online learning. Students will have access to written materials, video modules, desktop scenarios and case studies.
Students will be required to attend the 1-day Support Shotfiring delivery at the Mines Rescue station.
Assessment includes written and oral tests, practical workplace assessments under the guidance of an appropriate workplace mentor and submitted projects/assignments. Assessments are completed in Microsoft Word; please ensure you have an active Microsoft Office subscription before enrolment.
Our Mines Rescue trainers are available via phone or email to assist with any questions you may have while completing this course of study.
Duration
Students will typically complete the course over a 12–18-month period.
Entry requirements
- There are no formal prerequisites for this course
- As part of your course enrolment, you will be required to complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) Quiz and an Academic Integrity eLearning prior to commencing course work.
- It is expected that you have experience working in an underground coal mine environment and access to an underground workplace mentor to complete assessments
- This course is based on a Certificate IV level qualification. You should have appropriate literacy, numeracy and computer skills to manage course work, activities and assessments.
