Frequently asked questions - workers
As part of Order 45 health surveillance, the approved medical practitioner (Order 45 Doctor) has identified a medical condition that requires further investigation and/or occupational exposure that requires monitoring.
As a result, they have asked you to complete a health assessment review to clarify and gather further information about this condition.
You may be asked to visit your own treating doctor for further assessment or investigation related to your medical condition. In most cases, the results or information from this follow-up should be provided back to the Order 45 Doctor. However, you may receive a referral that is made as a duty of care. In these cases, the referral is for your personal health and wellbeing, and you are not required to report the outcome back to the Order 45 Doctor.
The Order 45 Doctor has requested a health assessment review because they are concerned that you may have a medical condition which, if left unmonitored, could have a negative impact on your health and safety, or the safety of your workmates.
Health assessment reviews are compulsory under Order 45.
It is important to understand that a health assessment review gives conditional clearance for the period shown on your health assessment certificate (e.g. 3, 6, 12 months). If the health assessment review is not completed within this timeframe, your health assessment certificate will expire.
CS Health encourages both coal mine workers and employers to treat the health assessment review as an extension of the Order 45 health assessment and to view it as necessary for protecting ongoing health and safety.
CS Health will send reminders to both you and your employer about upcoming medical reviews at the following intervals:
- First reminder: eight (8) weeks before the review’s scheduled due date
- Second (final) reminder: four (4) weeks after the review’s scheduled due date.
You are responsible for organising your medical review appointment and/or follow-up. However, some employers may choose to facilitate this on behalf of their workforce. Please check with your employer if this is a service they offer.
Note: Your employer will not be notified of the nature of your medical condition; only that you require a health assessment review.
If you do not complete the health assessment review after the final reminder, a note will be added to your medical file indicating that the review was not completed as requested.
Your workplace may have its own process for managing outstanding medical reviews, and they will discuss this process with you separately.

As a result, they will ask the coal mine worker to complete a health assessment review to clarify and gather further information about their condition.
A worker may be referred to their own treating doctor for further assessment or investigation related to a medical condition. In most cases, the worker will be asked to provide the relevant information back to the Order 45 Doctor to support completion of the health assessment review. However, there may be instances where a referral is made as a duty of care. In these cases, the referral is for the worker’s personal health and wellbeing, and they are not required to return any information to the Order 45 Doctor.
Depending on the health assessment review type, the Order 45 Doctor will set the timeframe for the health assessment review (e.g. 6 months, 12 months).
