Two new Occupational Hygienists have joined Coal Mines Technical Services (CMTS), expanding the team’s knowledge and capabilities in this specialist field.
Kerrie Burton joins the team as a Senior Occupational Hygiene Specialist and has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Chemistry, a Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hygiene and Masters of Science by Research (Occupational Hygiene), University of Wollongong. She is a Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH) and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (FAIOH) and has 20 years of experience in the steel industry. She also has a Certificate 1V in Workplace Training and Assessment.
Lisa Malloy joins CMTS as an Occupational Hygienist and completed her Bachelor of Occupational Health and Safety at the University of Newcastle, NSW and her Masters of Science (Occupational Hygiene Practices) at the University of Wollongong NSW. She has 13 years’ experience including laboratory co-ordination, sampling and analysis of inhalable dust, respirable dust and respirable silica, bulk asbestos & airborne fibre asbestos sampling and analysis. Lisa’s experience in occupational hygiene monitoring and assessment includes both the underground and surface coal industry.

While times have changed, one thing has remained constant – our role to protect the safety and health of workers and to support employers in the NSW coal mining industry,” said Mark Shepherd, Compliance Manager – CMTS Occupational Hygiene.
“Building greater capacity within our team comes as a result of listening to industry. We are available to work alongside site representatives to develop and implement Health Control Plans, while providing ongoing support through evaluation and review. We are committed to providing guidance to mining operators on how to systematically manage health risks in the workplace so that the operators comply with the legislative framework and ensure there are no negative impacts on the health of workers or visitors potentially affected by workplace exposures.”

Occupational hygiene uses science and engineering to measure the extent of worker exposure, and to design and implement appropriate control strategies to prevent ill health caused by the working environment. It helps employers and employees understand the risks, and promotes improved working conditions and working practices.
