Last Friday, the Ashton mine site in Singleton was the backdrop for an extraordinary display of expertise at the Hunter Valley Mines Rescue competition. Four elite teams faced off in a high-stakes simulation that closely replicated the intense pressures of real-life mining disasters.
The teams, from various coal mines across the region, faced a series of intense scenarios in both underground and surface environments, testing their skills in search and rescue, first aid, firefighting, and theory.
The Integra team were named overall winners on the day, not only taking home the title but also saw their captain, Kurt Bereza, receive the prestigious Wayne Wallace shield for Best Captain.
Bereza praised the realistic nature of the exercises, stating,
“This year’s competition was unlike any other; the scenarios we faced were very realistic, as close to an actual mining emergency as can be simulated. The underground exercises especially challenged us with scenarios that can’t be replicated in training; testing our ability to respond to real-world situations.”
The day also served as an important reminder of the critical role these competitions play in preparing rescue teams for actual emergencies.
“These competitions are not just about who wins on the day; they’re of benefit for our entire mining community,” said Matt Enright, Regional Manager of Hunter Valley Mines Rescue. He highlighted how such events allow brigade members to practice and hone skills that are crucial when real-life disasters strike.
The Integra team will now go on to represent the Hunter Valley at the upcoming Australian competition, held later in the year.
