Introduction
This course develops your competency and confidence to prepare for and manage all aspects of an emergency situation in an underground coal mine.
Who should attend?
This course is recommended for mining officials, senior management and control room operators who may have a role in emergency management of an underground coal mine. This may include individuals who are involved in incident management or sitting for Undermanager or Manager statutory tickets.
What you will learn
- Effective coordination while participating in an incident management team
- Development, implementation and maintenance of an underground coal mine Emergency Management System
- Development of incident management procedures relative to your workplace
- How to monitor a developing situation
- How to determine appropriate intervention control techniques to respond to an emergency situation
- Mines Rescue team deployment
Credential issued
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for the following units:
- RIIERR501E Implement underground coal mine emergency preparedness and response systems
- RIIERR602E Establish and maintain underground coal mine emergency preparedness and response system
These units contribute to the completion of the RII50920 Diploma of Underground Coal Mining Management and the RII60320 Advanced Diploma of Underground Coal Mining Management.
Course delivery
This course is delivered through classroom-based training, desktop scenarios and practical exercises.
Assessment includes written, oral and practical tests.
Duration
Five days
Entry requirements
- There are no formal pre-requisites for this course.
- It is expected that you have experience working in an underground coal mine environment.
- This course is based on an Advanced Diploma qualification. You should have appropriate literacy and numeracy skills to manage course work, activities and assessments.

What you need to bring:
- Fully enclosed footwear
- Unique Student Identifier (USI) number
- A copy of your mine’s Emergency Management System for use during the course
- Student Portal login details
- Mines Rescue highly recommends bringing a laptop to classes at the station

Students Under 18
Mines Rescue minimum age for enrolment is 15 years.
If you are under 18 years of age we will require your parent or guardian to sign your Student Enrolment Form. Please contact a Mines Rescue Station directly to enquire or enrol into your course.
Visa Holders
Mines Rescue is not CRICOS (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students) registered. If you are visiting Australia and hold a visa, please contact Mines Rescue directly prior to enrolling into any of our courses.
